The first results of the VR project at Careggi: what patients and doctors are telling us

After the first few months of activity in Oncology at Careggi, we gathered feedback from patients, family members, and healthcare staff. Here’s what emerged.

Patient with VR headset

Three months of activity in the Oncology department of AOU Careggi. Dozens of VR sessions, an engaged clinical team, structured feedback.

What patients told us

"I loved all the meditation journeys" — an oncology patient after a chemotherapy session. The most frequent finding: the perception of time decreases. A one-hour infusion is described as having "passed in a moment".

What doctors and nurses say

Healthcare staff highlight two concrete benefits: patients are more cooperative during the procedure and a calmer ward atmosphere. The visor's 10-second setup does not slow down the workflow.

Next steps

We are working with AOU Careggi to structure a more systematic data collection, integrating both qualitative and quantitative metrics. The goal: build solid evidence on the clinical impact of therapeutic VR in the Italian oncology context.
