Body Microneedling: Does It Hurt? What to Expect from the Treatment

What is body microneedling

Body microneedling uses a device with micro-needles (0.5 to 2.5 mm) that create micro-punctures in the skin. This stimulates collagen production and promotes skin renewal. On the body, it is used for stretch marks, scars, skin laxity, and cellulite.

Does it hurt? It depends on three factors: needle depth, the area treated, and preparation.

Depth and pain: the relationship

  • 0.5-1 mm: Mild discomfort, a "sandpaper" feeling sliding on the skin. Tolerable without anesthesia for most people.

  • 1-1.5 mm: Moderate discomfort. Numbing cream is recommended. Sensation of repeated micro-punctures.

  • 1.5-2.5 mm: Significant pain without anesthesia. Numbing cream required. Even with the cream, you feel pressure and the needles passing.

For the body (stretch marks, scars), work is typically done at 1.5-2.5 mm. That is, in the range where it is felt the most.

Area by area

Thighs (stretch marks): Moderate pain. Relatively thick skin, good tolerance.

Abdomen (post-pregnancy stretch marks): Moderate-to-high pain. Abdomen skin is sensitive, especially after pregnancy when it is still in the recovery phase.

Glutes: Low-to-moderate pain. Good tolerance.

Arms (inner): Moderate-to-high pain. Thin skin.

Breasts (stretch marks): High pain. Very sensitive area, deep needles for stretch marks.

How long does a session last

  • Small areas (single scar): 15-20 minutes

  • Large areas (thighs + glutes): 45-60 minutes

  • Sessions: 4-6, spaced 4-6 weeks apart

Longer sessions = more fatigue to endure. The pain threshold lowers as the minutes pass.

How it is managed today

Numbing cream (standard)

Applied 30-45 minutes before. Significantly reduces pain but does not eliminate it in deep areas. The limit: in large areas (full legs), the cream can lose its effect before the end of the session.

Device speed

An experienced operator knows how to modulate speed and pressure. Faster = less painful but less effective.

Immersive distraction (VR)

For 45-60 minute sessions on large areas, VR is an ideal solution:

  • Covers the entire duration of the session

  • The patient does not see the device approaching the skin (visual trigger)

  • Reduces "pain fatigue" from long sessions

  • Makes the most sensitive areas bearable without increasing anesthesia

After the treatment

  • Intense redness (like a sunburn): 24-48 hours

  • Sensitivity to touch: 2-3 days

  • Light peeling: 3-5 days

  • Visible results: after 2-3 sessions

Is it worth it?

Body microneedling is one of the few treatments with real evidence on stretch marks (which are notoriously difficult to treat). The pain is there, but it is manageable and the result is tangible.

The key is to complete the cycle. Those who give up after 2 sessions due to discomfort will not see results. Having a clinic that cares about comfort during treatment increases the chances of finishing the course.

Body microneedling works, but it requires consistency. Clinics that offer Lemons in the Room during needling sessions make even those 45-60 minutes on sensitive areas bearable — without increasing anesthesia, without additional medications.
